甍の波と雲の波、
重なる波の中空を、
橘かをる朝風に、
高く泳ぐや鯉のぼり。

Tile roof waves and cloud waves,
in the sky of the overlapping waves,
to the morning winds with scent of Tachibana,
Koinobori are swimming aloft. 
開ける廣きその口に、
船をも呑まん 様見えて、
ゆたかに振ふ 尾鰭には、      
物に動ぜぬ姿あり。

The open wide mouth,
it may swallow a boat,  and
richly shaking tail fin,
no one can move it but winds.
百瀬の瀧を登りなば、
忽ち龍になりぬべき、
わが身に似よや男子と、
空に躍るや鯉のぼり。
"swimming upstream,  passing the overlapping
rapids,  I become Ryu.
 Imitate me, boys!”  saying,
Koinobori are jumping in the sky.

“鯉のぼり”(koinobori) is Koi-fish windsock that parents with young son display for their son from the end of April to the first week of May in Japan.
